Sarah Kuehnert started out in dairy, continued in dairy, but enjoys working on being good at multiple skills. In addition to her work on the family farm, she serves as the Lead Dietitian at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Indiana.
Growing up on a seventh-generation farm with dairyers on both sides of the family, Sarah started showing and judging dairy cows in 4-H at a young age. After graduation, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition from Purdue, then completed her dietetic internship at the New York Institute of Technology to become a registered dietitian — an education she puts to work in the family business as well as at the hospital.
Though she started dating future husband Nathan Kuehnert at Purdue, the two were in one another’s distant orbit growing up, since they attended many of the same 4-H and other dairy show events and contests. Like a lot of Northeast Indiana farm kids, she notes, “We knew each other before we knew each other.”
In addition to serving as resident dietitian and business partner for Kuehnert’s — alongside Nathan, his brother Andrew, and sister-in-law Brittany — Sarah oversees calf care and show cows as well as supporting the success of the new Kuehnert Milk House and arranging school and public tours of the farm. The four also put in extra work each year to prep for and run the Fall Festival.
“Their smiles, their laughter, their interacting with one another” — these are her favorite parts of having people at the Festival. “It’s priceless.”
