Meet: Sarah Kuehnert

The dairying life is as much a part of Sarah Kuehnert’s bones as the calcium of her farm’s milk! Growing up on a 7th-generation operation, with dairyers on both sides of her family, she showed and judged cows in 4-H from a young age - also, incidentally, where she got to know her future husband, Nathan Kuehnert. Like a lot of farm kids, she explains their families went to so many of the same events that “we knew each other before we knew each other.”

Sarah earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in Dietetics and completed her dietetic internship at the New York Institute of Technology before becoming a registered dietitian. She is employed off-farm as the Lead Dietitian at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Indiana (near where her parents still operate their own dairy farm)… and on-farm overseeing calf care and show cows, as well as pitching in to work wherever needed!

But perhaps her biggest roles at Kuehnert Dairy Farm are as resident dietitian and helping family/business partners Nathan, his brother Andrew, and wife Brittany expand to welcome more visitors over the past 10 years. About 50,000 people of all ages now visit every year, including for the Fall Festival - and seeing them enjoying themselves and learning about farming is a great joy. “Their smiles, their laughter, their interacting with one another… it’s priceless,” she muses.

For a girl who grew up among gardeners, bakers, and farmers and decided to study how food intersects with human health, working in twin careers that enable her to tie production agriculture to nutrition - and educate the non-farm public about their food’s origins - is a dream posting. “I’ve actually been able to do what I’m very passionate about,” Sarah enthuses.

She and Nathan are celebrating their 18th wedding anniversary this year and are the parents of daughter Allie, 15, and son Bryar, 13.
